Conventions of a pop music video.

Firstly there are some conventions from mise en scene which are vital for pop videos, these are thing such as make up, setting, lighting and performance. One example is lighting. The lighting is normally high key which mean it is usually bright lighting and bright colours. Examples of this can be:

and Ed Sheeran- Sing

 

Also another convention which is used is used are close ups of artist. This is because we can feel close and have a connection with the audience as the artist will be looking in to the camera making eye contact. Examples of this are:

MAGIC! - Rude

Ariana Grande - Problem ft. Iggy Azalea



In editing there is fast paced editing where the music cuts to the beat which means that the scene changes on every beat of the song. The reason that thy do this is so that it doesn’t make it boring for the audience to watch so it keeps them interested and not lose focus on the music video. Examples of this are:

 

 

Another convention that is used a lot is make up. This tends to be bright and colourful and make the artist stand out from others in the music video. This allows all the attention to be on the artist as they stand out from everyone else. Some examples are shown below of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Jessie J.

 



Costume would also be a convention as in pop videos the costumes that the artist wears are usually bright and colourful just like the makeup. This is so that the main artist stands out from the rest, exactly the same as the makeup.

Eye contact is also a convention as this in turn allows the artist to make a connection with the audience through the music video as it makes them feel involved and noticed by the artist when he or she is singing.

The setting is also a convention because it can have a relation to the artist or the actual song.an example could be Ellie Goulding in my city, even though this has no music video this gives them the ideal chance to link that in with the setting.

Another convention of a pop video is hair style. Depending on what type of person the artist is there personality of style can differ. Two example of styles are the old vintage look or you have the new modern look which is what the majority of today’s music videos are.

 

Another convention is that the shots are short duration. This is that it fits with the music as well as the editing, this then keeps the audience interested and not lose focus and not get bored of looking at a shot for a longer period of time.

Why have I done It? I have done this so I can increase my knowledge on pop genre music videos.
