setting shots

The reason that we have chosen this setting for our music video is because it is a nice open area for the artist and the dancers to have when they perform the dance routine and also shows one side of her lifestyle that is going to be shown.

The reason that we have chosen this setting for our music video is because it is a straight path were we thought we can get close to that artist and use tracking shots as this will let us have a section where the artist can make a connection with the audience with maybe some close up shots with eye contact with the camera.

Here is another ally but in a different location which can show the difference in some of the locations and also does the same thing as the ally before this.

Here is another field which is going to be used for the same reason for the first picture of the field but it is set in a slightly different setting and a change in environment.

Here we are going to have a picture of the artist walking down a street with the moving cars and people which can show her as in she is moving on with what she is used to compared to the city shot which will be having

Locations

Locations

These images below highlight one location that we are thinking of using for our music video. This is the dance studio. We feel this would be an effective place to feel our video because it is very performance orientated. This is a large space that would fit a lot of people into which is important because we want to include a dance routine. This is also a good space to use because we can close the black curtains to create a more professional look. As well as this we are able to use a mixture of colours when producing the lighting. This is interesting and will help capture a more happy, joyful vibe in our video. I also feel this will look effective compared to the other locations we are looking at because it is a more expensive looking environment compared to the natural surroundings.

Another location I found was Carshalton ponds which is local to me. I captured some images of the ponds and the local pub. I felt this might be a good location to compare with London as it is quite simplistic. We could try and create shots to make this look more run down. However a problem of this is that it might be different to perform the dance routine as there might not be as much space as we want if we were to include the backgrounds.

Audience research

Over view of the music industry
Over the last ten years the music industry has changed dramatically. The revenue of recorded music has grown in Europe and latin america and has been stable in the US which has been growing by 0.8%. A sub category in the music industry is the digital side which contains revenues which have been growing by 4.3% in 2013. digital now accounts for 39% globally which is in three of the world top 10 markets. Finally the physical category of the music industry show that 60%of their shares were being declined in 2011 and 51% in 2012 which they still account for the majority if the music industries revenues.
Here shows the percentages of physical and digital format sales and revenues.

Pop genre audience research
Some examples of pop audiences are ones such as Jessie J's fans which are called the heartbeats. They prodominately consist of teenagers between the ages of 12-18 because of the identity that she portrays and can relate more to this certain age group than others. A reason why this is what her target audience is can be by one of her songs "who's laughing now" where it is set in a school which relates to the target audience as the majority of the audience go to school or in this case high school.
Here we can see the character that appears in the music video which is a school girl. also from this we can see that she has the same type of look as the artist.

Another example can be Taylor Swift where her target audience are pre-teens, teenagers and people who like country/pop genre of music. This shows that the audience that she has isn't just one type of age range or group, when it is in fact multiple groups of different ages.

How the artist attracts the audience

There are many ways that the artist can attract their audience. This can mainly be through Mise en scene such as the setting of the music video, the costume that the artist is wearing and maybe the performance that the artist is doing during the music video.

Firstly we can have the setting. This is one way that they do this is by linking places that are common to the everyday life of their selected target audience. A great example of this is Jessie J ‘who’s laughing now’ where the setting of the music video is set in a high school. This links to the target audience that they have chosen because the audience would be going to school.
Another way that the artists attract the target audience is by the type of costume that is worn in the music video. What the artist does is they look at what their target audience that they have set and take a look at the style of clothing that they are wearing in this day and age. From this they can then wear costumes that the audience will like and make them want to watch on to see if the artist is wearing anything new so that it will start a new trend in fashion.
here are 2 examples where they have taken into account on what the target audience usually wear and what the artist may want to try and start them to wear so that the audience can feel like they have a connection with Jessie J.

what is this post? this post is our take on what the pop audience might be.
why have I done it? I have don this so I can research the possible target audiences for pop
what have I learnt? I have learnt what type of audience the genre of pop stereotypically have which are teens and up.

Audience research

Over view of the music industry

Over the past 10 years the music industry as changed dramatically, this is because they are expanding to new markets and creating new business models. The music video industries grew by approximately  4.3 percent in the year of 2013 there for they are making around $5.9 Billion a year (which is increasing). There was major growth in profits from ad supported music videos, this means that the adverts are paying to be advertised before the music video itself. The money paid goes towards the music industry (adverts are normally played on popular and recent music videos).

Another way the music industry is making money is through Global brands such as Deezer and Spotify, both these companies make money out of providing music to users. The money is then invested in the music industry because you can buy premium subscription, the number of paying subscribers to these music websites grew rapidly in 2013 to 28 million which is up 40% on 2012 and increased for only 8 million in 2010.

This then attracts more people world wide to the music industry. The top music videos are commonly based around the genres of Pop and Indie at the moment, the music industry is constantly making money, this is because big named artists producing good music videos to promote them. Through the promotion the music industry can then make even more money by holding concerts for the artist or band to play. Although music has changed over the years such as Elvis presely who is known world wide and who was top of the music in the 1950's -1970's we now have artists such as Justin Beiber and Iggy Azalea who don't remain at the top of the charts for too long, a few weeks maximum. Showing that the music industry currently has more artists than ever before.

However the music industry has to be aware that there could be loss of money at any time because as technology is getting more advanced however so are people who pirate music, this is a massive loss in money the music industry. As people are able to get hold of the music however not pay for it. Although they try to tackle this problem it's still an increasing issue and develops a loss at the end of the working year for the music company.

Pop Genre audience research
Pop music videos have a large audience, it is known for having a 'wide appeal' this means artists under the genre vary because it's large. Stereotypically pop is known for aiming their music for girls aged 12-18. However this isn't true. Pop aims their music towards teenagers and young adults of any gender however sometimes specifically towards females but we also know males listen to the genre of pop. Pop music is everyday music, you will hear it the majority of radio stations in cars, adverts on tv and the top of the charts song is likely to be pop. Pop is the most known genre of music with the largest target audience base, there for there are sub-genres of pop.

The most popular music video is All about that bass by Meghan Trainor. Looking more in depth at her music video you would be able to see that the audience for it are likely to be older females possibly around the ages of 16-20 as the song is serious however pop, the lyrics are also aimed at older people this is showing that not all pop videos are based around the stereotypical fan base of '12 year old girls.'

However not all pop videos are aimed at just female audiences particularly, now in the music industry an example of a song that has an older audience would be Maps by maroon 5. The music video aims at anyone who is into the genre of pop. You can see by the cover of the album it isn't pink and bright and there for not appealing to younger audiences.

This is an example of how the music industry is reaching out to other audiences with different interests for example someone who was to listen to Meghan Trainor - It's all about that bass you are looking more towards a female audience of a young adult age who maybe interested in current celebrity gossip and current affairs of what is happening. However if it was a pop band such as Maroon 5 they would have target audience of teenage boys and girls around the age of 15-20 who maybe into more of a rock side of pop.

How do media industries target those audiences:

Music industries target audiences of pop through many different techniques, firstly you have celebrity cameos this means they get celebrities to appear in music videos, the celebrity could be another singer or a celebrity in general who doesn't associate with the band or artist. This then makes the audience instantly

In the video above we it's Rizzle Kicks - Skip to the good bit it features Will Poulter who features in multiple movies and has no relation to Rizzle Kicks however he is an easily recognisable actor world wide and having him in a music video makes it more appealing as it makes people ask question

Audience Research

Music Industry
The music industry is constantly expanding and attracting new audiences as well as bringing more artists into the industry. The music revenues have grown in Europe, Latin America and the US with a 0.8% increase. In 2013 it was highlighted that the digital revenues grew by 4.3% in the US resulting in a $5.9 billion global revenue. Therefore digital now accounts for 39% of the industry’s global revenues. Websites such as Beats Music and YouTube have launched plans to provide subscription services, which will result in more users. This subscription process has become more popular and the amount of services has risen by eight million since 2010. The advertising supported services such as YouTube and Vevo has increased their revenues 17.6% and they have extended YouTube to more than 50 countries.

However even though the uprising digital market is increasing, physical music sales still account for a large proportion of the industry revenues. Some of the main sellers include gifts and deluxe box sets. These physical formats account for more than half at 51.5% of the global revenues compared to the56.1% in 2012. This has highlighted a decline, which has not been effective for the industry.

Revenue has also been increased from performance rights.  This income topped the US $1.1 billion globally for the first time in 2013.

Revenue has also come from synchronization deals. This comes from the use of music in TV adverts as well as films and brand partnerships, however this has seen a 3.4% decline in 2013. Other factors that have majorly impacted the synchronization revenues are the tough economic conditions, lower fees and the decline of the music games sector.

The audience for Music Videos
The relationship between a musician and a fan has always been built on ‘nonsense’ however it has now developed in unexpected new ways. The more awareness there is of an artist, the more they appear on social media. This therefore then results in more fans and the more they can make from their fans.  Some pop artists such as Justin Bieber named his fan base Beliebers before the fans could do so.
Fans are stereotypically young females who are obsessed with the artists especially males artists such as One Direction and Justin Bieber, however this is not true. There are a mixture of fans with each artist and songs are aimed at different audiences. Pop songs are heard in variety of locations such as on the radio and tv and it is very common for people to know the most recent pop songs.

Pop audience are changing. Before fans were known to be all girls that are classed as crazy, however now there are male fans and fans of an older audience.

After doing some research I found a website describing how to become a Justin Bieber fan. It states that his fans are not actually fans but they are Beliebers.  It also highlights that to be a Belieber you have to memorize all of the song lyrics from his oldest song to the newest. In addition the merchandise isn’t very important but what is more important is if you make things that you can take to his concerts and learning about Bieber is very important. A lot of his fans know all of his background information such as when he was born, his family and where he grew up etc. To add to this real ‘Beliebers’ like to display to everyone that they are beliebers and even if they are teased they stick with it. His fans also tend to make twitter fan account so they can connect with other fans and try to contact Justin himself. This highlights that people take fans very seriously and feel by becoming fans they are connecting with the artist.
On the other hand fans can be quite reserved and generally just enjoy the music they are listening to. They are not particularly obsessed with the artist, they just believe they have talent. People would be believe these are fans of older artist however these could be everyday young and old people who enjoy music. They may not highlight their passion for the artist but they would definitely enjoy meeting them if it was possible.
How does the artist attract the audience?
Music videos use product placement in order to attract the audience. For example they will place a item of technology into the music video or a particular brand of clothing. The reason for this is because they are trying to make it relevant to the audience or to perhaps make the audience aspire to be like the artist. This is an interesting way to draw in the audience and especially target those of a teenage generation. This is an example from Katy Perry Roar where product placement is used to display a phone.

In addition to this they try to create an image for the artist that is fashionable. This is to make the audience want to look and be like the artist. They purposely dress them in nice clothes that people would want to buy because it makes the audience want to keep watching to see how the artist looks.
They also use specific items and topics in the video to attract the age group they are trying to attract. For example they use bright colours and common locations to make the audience feel involved in what they are watching.

Celebrity Cameo is also used to attract the target audience. This means the producers create a music video and include celebrities in it for no reason. The reason for this is because they want to attract an audience that are interested in celebrities. Celebrities are well known and people enjoy watching what they are doing
